PMI IT & Telecom SIG establishes stronger ties in Beijing, China
2008 is the year where the world has connected with Beijing, China due to the recent success of 29th Summer Olympics. 2008 is also the year where project management communities in Greater China and South East Asia have connected with Beijing due to the recent success of International Project Management Forum 2008 (IPMF 2008).
PMI IT & Telecom SIG had given an honor to contribute to this largest and prestige annual International Project Management conference jointly organized by Greater China Project Management Advancement Committee (GPAC) and Tsinghua University over a two days period from 1 &2 Nov 2008 , Beijing China.

The theme of IPMF 2008 was "Project Management Best Practices ---- Integrating Strategy, Organization and Implementation". This theme enabled thought leaders, project management practitioners, and academicians from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Southeast Asian countries to exchange their project management expertise, views and provide a valuable insight into successful application of modern project management with real-life case studies.

The content shared at the Forum was excellent and definitely world class. It is not possible to cover all of the topics here but a few of the hottest topics worth mentioning are; a project funded by Project Management Institute (PMI) on "Researching the value of Project Management"; Insight on Project Management issues, challenges and innovations during the development of the Olympic 2008 National stadium (Bird's Nest) were shared; the touching speech by the speaker from Che Zhi on how project management help in international humanitarian aids etc.

PMI IT & Telecom SIG was represented by our Vice President of Operations Mr. Andy Maxymillian PMP®. Mr. Maxymillian shared his expertise in integrating Configuration Management into IT Project Life Cycles. Also representing the PMI IT & Telecom SIG was the Regional Director of Asia Pacific Mr. SK Khor PMP®. Mr. Khor shared his real life project risk management experience in managing five complex international airport system programs.
The Forum also provided the IT & Telecom SIG with the opportunity to listen to presentations and discuss various project management topics with fellow delegates. Amazingly, we found out during this adventure was that although cultures may starkly contrast each other, Project Managers face similar challenges regardless of where they work and live. Many of the project management sessions discussed issues of risk, team building, problem solving, professionalism, and the list goes on. Each person we met shared with us issues and opportunities we could relate to, no matter what language we spoke. We were amazed at the commonalities that exist.
From a personal perspective, the experience we had in China was wonderful. We had the chance to experience a completely different culture, hospitality and, of course, the Chinese cuisine. Our arrival to Beijing started with a group sharing dinner around a "large" table that could easily seat 20 people. A continuous stream of interesting and delicious dishes went on for hours. The food served over our short stay was always excellent, and the finest choice by our host. From Beijing duck to octopus, the quality of food was second to none. We dined at the Steam Boat, home to the "flying noodles" which were delicious and served in a most unusual way, Our lunches, dinners and even a short coffee breaks allowed us to meet people and provide them information, opportunities and members benefits about PMI IT & Telecom SIG. We met some of our members face to face and were encouraged by the interest and potential members in this region.
