Implementing Scrum/PM at EMC Centera

EMC Centera has gone through some major changes in the last two years in the way they deliver products. The implementation of Scrum at Centera has gone hand-in-hand with the implementation of a matrix organization.

Implementing Scrum in a Matrix environment presented a number of significant challenges but has ultimately proved to be extremely successful. Centera has been commended by senior management as a highly productive organization delivering quality and predictably. In this discussion, EMC Centera Senior Program Manager Michael Jack and Bob Sarni, the Agile Practice leader for CIBER's Agile practice will discuss some of the more challenging issues that EMC Centera faced, how they solved them and alternative solutions which could be valuable to others who are working on introducing Scrum in a Matrix organization.

Michael Jack is a senior program manager with EMC's Centera division. Michael is a PMP with more than 14 years managing complex software programs. Michael has implemented matrix project management in three other companies but until this project, had never worked with Scrum.

Bob Sarni is the Agile Practice Leader for CIBER Inc. and Certified Scrum Coach. Bob provides guidance to the CIBER Agile consulting community and fills the role of Product Owner for CIBER's enterprise Agile product backlog.
